Photo of the Week - Week 4:

Ringsend's AV320 is seen on rare Route 77X to Belfield on Baggot Street Lower on the 31st August 2012.

The 77X is a lesser spotted route, being confined to a single inbound morning departure. The route began back in 1994, replacing Route 50X in a review of Tallaght services. It operated from Jobstown to the City Centre. Notably in the late 90s, with St. Luke's Avenue (Coombe Bypass) not in place, the 77X used the South Circular Road and Clanbrassil Street to avoid the traffic bottleneck at Ardee Street. In April 2001, the Tallaght QBC was launched, and even though the 77X didn't actually operate along the Tallaght QBC, the route was extended to Belfield. It was reduced to a one-way service in April 2009 as part of a series of cut-backs at this time.

Map of Route 77X. Click on map for larger version. Routing: Depart Citywest then as per Route 77A to Killinarden Heights, then right onto Whitestown Way, right at Roundabout to Killtipper Way looping at 54A terminus and returning to roundabout at Whitestown Way, right onto Firhouse Road West, Old Bawn Road, Seskin View Road then as per Route 77A to Townsend Street, Lombard Street East, Westland Row, Merrion Street Lower, Merrion Square West, Merrion Square South, Fitzwilliam Street Lower, Baggot Street, Waterloo Road, Morehampton Road, Donnybrook Road, Stillorgan Road, Belfield Flyover, UCD Belfield.

The exact 77X routing has been misreported for sometime. Pre-2009 there were two 77X departures in the morning, one from Citywest via Tallaght Village (Departing: 0720), and one from Ellensborough via Seskin Ciew (departure: 0730). There was then one return departing Belfield at 1625, then College Street at 1650. The return departure was removed in the April 2009 changes, as basically was the service through Tallaght Village, however to compensate the 0730 departure from Ellensborough was extended to CityWest departing at 0720, the departure time of the previous service. However, in the timetable the service was listed as from Ellensborough only at 0730, and has been incorrect since then. The Transport for Ireland timetable for the 77X gives some indication that all is not right, correctly listing the route as CityWest to Belfield, however the intermediary stops are random and the departure time is incorrectly listed at 0730. The Dublin Bus timetable still indicates the South Circular Road/Clanbrassil Street routing, though this has been gone for sometime, probably since the April 2009 changes with St. Luke's Avenue being the much quicker way into the city. The Dublin Bus list of stops in the RTPI list shows the St. Luke's Avenue routing.

Ringsend's AX493 is seen turning onto the Belfield Flyover operating Route 77X on the 29th August 2012.
